Calling all fans of Free and Paul Kossoff..!

This year’s annual Free Convention will take place on 14 November 2015 at the Park Hotel, Tynemouth. As ever, organiser Bill Flynn has been eager for the UK’s leading tribute to the music of Free and Paul Kossoff to take centre stage.

Freeway endeavour to make every live show as authentic and true to the spirit and music of Free as possible and they have something extraordinary planned for the fans at this year’s Convention.

Freeway’s John Buckton and Rob Dunn will be playing a full set with two very special guests as a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Back Street Crawler’s "The Band Plays On" which was originally released in November 1975.

Vocalist and founder member of Back Street Crawler – Terry Slesser – will be fronting this unique Kossoff-inspired collaboration, singing a mix of classic Free songs and Back Street Crawler material that has not been performed live since Kossoff’s final gig in 1976 at the Starwood, Los Angeles.
Jaz Lochrie (Bad Company, Paul Rodgers Band) has agreed to complete the line-up on bass following a special invitation from Terry Slesser. Jaz will be flying in from the States to be part of this exclusive event.

As a special tribute to Andy Fraser, members of Sharks will also be performing an exclusive acoustic set on the night and other special guests are to be confirmed.

Tickets for this unmissable night of British blues rock are already on sale. Buy now to avoid disappointment by emailing freeconvention@aolcom

People say it's a bad idea to meet your heroes. However, all we can say in the light of today's sad news about the death of the legendary Andy Fraser is that it was a great honour, an immense privilege and an absolute pleasure to work alongside Andy at the Free Convention two years ago. Andy was generous, open, positive and funny. He made us laugh so much during the afternoon soundcheck. Hundreds of Free fans turned out to see him that night and Andy was stunned by the outpouring of affection and the passion that still exists for the music of Free.

The loss of Andy seems all the more tragic by the fact that we'd all been so excited about the prospect of seeing him playing live and touring with Simon Kirke again later this year.

All of us here at extend our deepest condolences to Andy's family and friends.

We will continue to reproduce the music of Free as faithfully as ever, with integrity and passion and in memory of Andy. Our show at the Darlington Forum on 22 May will be a special tribute to Andy Fraser and the massive legacy he leaves behind.

The word 'legend' is bandied about too often these days, particularly in the music-sphere...however it is the right word to use about Andy Fraser. Like all stars, he will continue to cast a light upon the world despite the fact that he is gone.

Sail On, Andy. Rest in peace.

Thanks to all who supported this year's Free Convention. Read Bill Bradshaw's entertaining and comprehensive review of the event on our 'Reviews' page.

The event (which featured Simon Kirke, Freeway and the Deborah Bonham Band) raised approximately £2400 (money still coming in!) for the excellent Willows Animal Sanctuary.

11 August 2014

Freeway will be playing a double-headlining gig with The Hookahs at The Riverside Lodge in Morpeth on 12 September. Tickets for the show featuring both of these amazing bands are only £5 (!!!) and will be available on the door on the night. What a bargain! Good luck to Bob who will be doing what he does best - singing all night.

The very next evening, on Saturday 13 September, Freeway will be playing another fantastic double-headliner with Black Rose (Thin Lizzy tribute) at Hartlepool United Supporters Club. Tickets for this show to see two of the region's best tribute bands are available at a BARGAIN £6!! See you there!

Freeway are honoured to have been asked (yet again!) to headline 2014's Annual Free Convention at the Park Hotel, Tynemouth on Saturday 8 November.

We are thrilled to announce that the fantastic Deborah Bonham Band will also be making an appearance at the Convention; those of you who are Paul Rodgers fans (I'm assuming most of you, yeah? - Ed.) will know that Deborah frequently supports Paul on tour and often joins him on stage for some absolutely belting duets. She does awesome versions of some of our favourite Free songs which we just can't wait to hear! Deborah is, quite simply, one of the best female blues vocalists in the world...and she's coming to Tynemouth! A big 'wey-aye' to that!

Funds raised at this year's convention will go to Willows Animal Sanctuary...Paul and Cynthia Rodgers are patrons of this excellent and very deserving animal welfare charity in Aberdeenshire. Paul will kindly be donating prizes which will be auctioned on the night to raise extra funds.

A huge thank-you from all of us goes to Bill Flynn who puts in so much hard work in organising the Convention. He's always looking to raise the bar and his ambition and vision in booking acts such as Deborah Bonham for the Convention ensures variety and quality for the punters.

Tickets for this incredible show are priced at ONLY £15!! Email for further information and ticket bookings/reservations...and do it QUICKLY!!
